The Baluch are a nation, and every nation has the right to national self-determination. The Baluch seek to establish their right to an independent state through negotiations and peaceful settlement; however, Iranian leaders must decide the region’s path to coexistence. Independence is a fundamental aspiration for most Baluch.
The struggle for national self-determination among the various ethnic groups within Iran is a highly volatile situation that is on the brink of escalation. If not addressed, it could potentially undermine the modern state of Iran as we know it and evolve into a catastrophic ethnic conflict.
The Baluch have a history of autonomy and can, sooner or later, garner external support, which strongly supports their claims to the national right to self-determination. Furthermore, the Baluch wars for national self-determination could be more violent and protracted than other internal conflicts in Iran.
Some leaders from Iranian minority groups use the idea of national self-determination to challenge the central government. They aim to gain power by increasing their influence. In this context, claims of self-determination mainly serve to secure political or economic benefits from the central government.
The ideal of self-determination has also become a legitimate topic of international discussion, as minority groups increasingly use it to secure advantages from their own governments.
The discrimination faced by national minorities in Iran varies in size and shape; thus, the right to self-determination is not the primary demand for every national minority. Some groups with a history of autonomy or outside support are pursuing it more aggressively than weaker minorities.
This shows that those who can challenge the state often use self-determination claims strategically. Conflicts over self-determination are deadlier and more entrenched than those based on class, religion, or other ideologies. Therefore, self-determination is not just a tool for gaining power. Given the seriousness of these conflicts and the growing importance of self-determination for some national minorities, policymakers inside and outside Iran should pay closer attention to the Baluch demand for national self-determination.
