young man, Abid s/o Washdil, was critically injured in a shooting by state-backed assailants

We are deeply concerned about the recent incident in Kech, Turbat, where a young man, Abid s/o Washdil, was critically injured in a shooting by state-backed assailants. Abid, who had recently been released after being forcibly disappeared by Pakistani forces on March 21, 2023, was targeted while working at a puncture shop near Apsar Mehre Hotel.

This attack highlights the ongoing pattern of violence and intimidation against individuals who have been forcibly disappeared and subsequently released, as well as against social activists in Balochistan. It is alarming to note that this is the third such incident in Kech in the last two months, indicating a disturbing trend of targeted killings of those who have already suffered the trauma of enforced disappearance.

Paank calls on the Pakistani authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into this attack, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. We also urge the government to take immediate steps to protect the lives and rights of all citizens, particularly those who have been victims of enforced disappearances and are at risk of further harm.

The continuing impunity for such attacks only serves to perpetuate the cycle of violence and fear in the region. It is imperative that the authorities uphold their obligations under international human rights law to protect individuals from enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and other forms of violence.

Paank stands in solidarity with the victims and their families and reiterates its commitment to advocating for justice and accountability in Balochistan.
